“Eat My Brains”
Every once in a while, somebody writes something incredibly personal and, without necessarily intending to, speaks for millions of other people.
That’s what I hear in “Eat My Brains.”
She wrote a song about looking at yourself and not liking what you see. About insecurity, self-consciousness, and that brutal little voice in your head that convinces you everyone else sees the same flaws you do. I think those feelings probably speak for an enormous part of the world’s young population.
And I know that feeling because I felt it too.
There’s also something here that deserves recognition beyond the song itself: courage. It takes courage for someone her age to put feelings like these into words, perform them, and then allow other people to hear them. It would be much easier to hide those insecurities than to stand in front of a camera and say, this is what goes through my head.
I admire her for doing that. I admire the honesty and vulnerability of it, because somewhere another young person may hear this song and realize somebody else understands exactly what they’re feeling.
Different generation, different circumstances, same insecurities.
Sometimes the most powerful art happens when somebody thinks they’re only telling their story and discovers they’ve told everybody else’s too.
With admiration for her courage and honesty.
